Exceptional Langtons Classification. Great wines are born in great vineyards. At Leeuwin the viticulturist and winemaker work hand in hand throughout the winemaking process. Variations and deficiencies in the individual blocks have not been completely corrected so that the wine reflects the soil. Block 20 forms the backbone of Art Series. The young wine begins with true varietal power of great delicacy which requires up to twelve months lees contact in new French oak to draw out the complexity, losing none of that essential balance in the process.

Chardonnay / Mt Barker Great Southern / WesternAustralia
The infectious enthusiasm of the late great Jack Mann, encouraged a small number of farmers in the Great Southern to try their hand at viticulture. The three Goundrey vineyards were amongst the first to be planted at Mount Barker, they remain meticulously managed and cared for by a dedicated team who work closely to ensure vintages of the finest fruit. At the core of Forest Hill's elite range of single block editions, are the original estate plantings of the 1960s and 1970s. These gnarly old vines are deep rooted and dry grown, defined by their low vigor and scant harvest of tiny berries, conspicuous for an intenity of flavour and wonderful crystalline textures. These are the earliest and most precious parcels of Chardonnay in all Great Southern, yielding a graceful yellow wine, brimming with golden peach and grapefruit characters, florals, almonds and flint, its powerful mineral finish driven by juicy, ripe stonefruit acidity.

Chardonnay vines fare exceptionally well in Margaret River, as appropriate shading yields intensely flavoured fruit with excellent natural acidity. The afternoon sea breezes typical of the region, cap the daytime temperatures and produce cool summer nights for which Margaret River is renowned. The balmy climes encourage ripening of the white varieties as flavour ripeness is achieved at lower Baumes with excellent acid retention. Grapes must be picked from midnight to 7am and are processed separately without delay to preserve quality and freshness.

Kevin John Cullen was a passionate believer in the quality of Margaret River wines and particularly for the potential to achieve one of the world's great Chardonnay growing regions. He established the International Chardonnay Tasting, now in its third decade, to enable the efforts of Margaret River to be compared alongside the best vintages from around the world. Kevin John anticipated that the lessons learned from these comparisons would inspire his winemaking team to optimise the quality of Chardonnay grapes grown to the Cullen estate vineyards.
